Division with Remainder

In some division problems it makes sense to leave a remainder. For example, if Jay shares 13 balloons with four children, how many balloons does each child get? It makes sense that each child would get 13 balloons and that there would be one balloon left over.

Start with a division problem. For example, 53/4.

Each pile gets one block-of-10.

The remaining block-of-10 needs to be opened. Now, there are 13 single blocks.

Each pile gets 3 single blocks.

There is a remainder of one single block. So the answer is 13 with a remainder of 1.
